Last September of this year, the House Committee on Health has approved the proposed bill authored by Isabela Representative Rodolfo Albano which will legalize and regulate the use of 'Marijuana' for medical purposes. However, there are still many citizens and politicians who are openly against the legalization of it.
Just now, Buhay party-list Representative Lito Atienza has seek the attention of his colleagues in the House of Representatives to 'STOP' the bill on legalizing medical cannabis for it may possibly cause abuse and addiction.
In his press release, Representative Atienza made an example of a certain case in America where there is and allegedly abuse of opioids which will possibly happen here in the Philippines too if the said bill be legalized. According to Atienza, the said incident in America had encourage US President Trump to profess a public health emergency because of the increasing misuse and addiction of it.
Atienza said, “What is happening now in America, which is reeling from the widespread abuse of opioids, is guaranteed to happen here once we allow medical marijuana to be prescribed by Filipino physicians,”
“The measure will create new demand for marijuana. And when there is demand, supply will come in. Even our farmers will start cultivating marijuana, since they will be assured of a lucrative market by a rapidly growing number of addicts,” he added.
He also pointed out that even the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rejected the medical marijuana as it "does not meet the criteria for currently accepted medical use in treatment, that there is a lack of accepted safety for its use under medical supervision, and that it has a high potential for abuse."
In addition, Atienza also cited that the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) disagree of passing the bill into law because it compete against our country's policy to protect the well-being of the citizens.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that he still needs to study the said subject. Where he will need to measure the advantage the medical cannabis will bring to the medicine and politics.
