According to DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas, the MRT fare is need to be adjusted to “approximate bus fare.”

He said, “There will be changes next year… It doesn’t make sense that the MRT, which is faster and more reliable, is cheaper than an alternate mode of transportation.”

He added, "It will be unfair for the areas in the provinces if we continue to subsidize Metro Manila as we have done so for the past ten years. It seems that there is a fairness issue here. The money… can be redeployed to the countryside."

The amounts on the fare hike is not yet disclose and he promised to notify the passengers about the adjustment.

Roxas said, “We will have appropriate communications in preparation for these processes. Hindi naman po ito biglaan.”
