UOP Professor to President Duterte: 'STOP VIGILANTE KILLING'

The unstoppable former professor of Ateneo de Manila University who is now full-time professor of University of Portland has new sentiments for the president Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Prof. Christina Astorga urging Duterte to IMMEDIATELY STOP VIGILANTE KILLING.

UOP Professor to President Duterte: 'STOP VIGILANTE KILLING'

In her latest post on Facebook, Prof. Astorga questioned the incident in Davao region where over 17,000 illegal drug users surrendered to authorities from July 1 to July 10, confirmed by PDEA regional director Adizhar Albani.

She said on her post, "DAVAO IS STILL SATURATED WITH DRUG USERS?"

"STOP VIGILANTE KILLING! CREATE A DRUG COMMISSION TO PROPOSE A SYSTEMIC AND COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION!" she added.

The former professor of AdMU is now doubtful to the competence of the current president who used before the mayor of Davao City.

The professor said, "And who can clean up the country of drug users in 3-6 months when even after 20 years of the governance of Mayor Duterte, drug use is still at such alarming numbers in Davao."

"The drug problem should not be treated as isolated from other problems, otherwise, the solution taken is narrow and monolithic. The drug problem has its roots in poverty, lack of education, family dysfunction, lack of employment, mental and emotional illness, etc," the professor added.

Prof. Christina Astorga is very sure that the alleged "vigilante killing" under Duterte's administration is currently happening in the country. That's why she said this, "VIGILANTE KILLING IS NOT THE SOLUTION."

"It creates other social problems. The bloody drug war of countries like Thailand ultimately failed after killing thousands of drug addicts/pushers. One hundred drug addicts may be killed today, but unless the roots of the problem are not addressed, one hundred addicts will emerge at another day."

"Likewise, 15,000 drug addicts may surrender today, but unless there is a comprehensive program for their rehabilitation, education, and employment, they will take recourse in drugs again. "

"In countries like Netherlands and Portugal, the drug problem has been decriminalized; it has been treated as a health problem. Drug addicts were not killed; they were treated and healed through comprehensive social and health programs."

"WE URGE THE PRESIDENT TO IMMEDIATELY STOP VIGILANTE KILLING"

"that is creating a culture of violence and death in the country. He should concentrate on capturing, arresting, and prosecuting drug lords, instead of killing drug addicts or pushers who are at the lower level of the problem, and who are mostly our poor."

On the last part of her post, she advised the 16th president of the Philippines to create a new commission for dealing the problem on illegal drugs.

"He should create a DRUG COMMISSION that will study the experience of many countries in dealing with the drug problem, and which will propose a more systemic and comprehensive solution to the problem."
