5 Dead in Mayon Volcano Eruption

Tuesday morning, May 7, 2013, Mayon Volcano spewed ashes and rocks that killed 5 people including 4 foreigners. National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) official said 5 fatalities and 7 hikers injured.

NDRRMC executive director Eduardo del Rosario said that the rescue team was already on the site to rescue other trapped mountaineers.

Volcano tour guide Kenneth Jesalva said to ANC News, "Paakyat kami noon sa taas, nagpapahinga kami saglit at may narinig na kaming malakas na gulong ng mga bato. Iyung iba po naming kasamahan natamaan ng bato," then he added, "Tumakbo po kami sa may safe na lugar, yung bato na mag-cocover sa amin, pero di talaga kinaya."

According to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), spewing of ash was caused of the hydro-thermal explosion, this is also called "phreatic".

As of 4:54 pm, the rescue team members reached 1600 MASL elevation within Lidong Trail of Sto. Domingo is now descending due to bad weather and zero visibility.

In addition to this, the rescue team are now descending to camp 2 to meet some of the survivors then back to camp 1, according to the update of The Philippine mountaineering site.
