To all smokers out there, this is an announcement to all of you, starting on Friday, July 1, 2011, The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will start the Anti-Smoking campaign.
If ever you're caught smoking in a prohibited place, fines range from P500 for the first offense, up to P5,000 for the second, and up to P10,000 for the third offense.
According to MMDA, this is based on Republic Act 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act, as well as the Clean Air Act that bans smoking in public buildings and open public areas.
Meanwhile, in some cities like Mandaluyong, Muntinlupa, Navotas and Caloocan will have a wider enforcement of the campaign since they have ordinances that also ban smoking in streets and major thoroughfares.
