The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) clarified today that only 1 more Filipino is on death row in China after being convicted of drug trafficking. DFA spokesman, Assistant Secretary Eduardo Malaya, clarified in radio and television interviews that there are no such thing as “73 Filipinos on death row” in China.
Assistant Secretary Eduardo Malaya said 70 of the remaining 73 were given 2-year reprieves, which means their death sentences can be commuted to life imprisonment depending on their good behavior while in jail.
While in the 3 remaining, two have recently been given 2-year-reprieves and the other is awaiting a final review and judgment by the Supreme People's Court in China.
