Happy Halloween 2010

Today, a much awaited event before Christmas is Halloween. There are many candles of various sizes, colors, shapes, and embellishments have already start selling. Some media programs and other popular web sites are featuring the Halloween theme.

The celebration of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. Ancient belief had it that the world of the living and their departed loved ones merged on Halloween day, when the spirits of their departed ancestors were believed to return to earth on the evening of that day.

The festival of Samhain was celebrated by lighting bonfires and sacrificing crops and animals to Celtic deities, as people disguised themselves as animals using animal heads and skins as well as ghoulish and scary costumes to ward off spirits of their departed loved ones from possessing their bodies.

This year 2010, let us make the Halloween celebration simple, safe, and austere. We are reminded as well not to lose sight of the real essence of the annual tradition, which is to spend quiet moments in prayer for and in homage to our dearly departed loved ones and friends.

Happy 2010 Halloween!
